I had a pastor who one time told me his strategy for getting the largest possible raise. He set the agenda to talk about the other staff first. He made sure that there were a couple of people (preferably to the end of the agenda) he would advocate for to get a bigger raise. He made sure that they talked about him at the end thinking and believing that the committee would not want to give him, as the leader, a smaller raise than any of the employees.
I’m tempted to question his motives (though that would go against the principle of this message, so I’ll try not to.). This Pastor got the essence of this part of the Sermon on the Mount. How you treat others has a strong correlation with how you will be treated. However, this is not just be nice to others, so that they will be nice to you, which ends up being selfish. Instead, I think the idea is to put yourselves in the shoes of others.
