Irrational Guard Dog
#187
Friend,
Have I told you about our Golden Doodle, Cubbie?
He’s 3, full of energy, thinks everyone is his friend, except the delivery driver, and then he turns into an irrational guard dog, hell-bent on protecting us from these crazy murderers who leave envelopes, books, and Christmas presents on our porch.
For some reason, I decided to put myself in his paws.
And here is what I think he thinks (if he is actually thinking). He has saved our family hundreds of times. These evildoers have approached the house, and his barking has scared them off every time! So what does he do? He has to keep barking. He has to keep protecting us. He has to keep being a good boy.
It actually made me think of you as well.
We all have a dog inside of us that is protecting us from danger. Something happened to us, scared us, or threatened us, and every time something reminds us of that again, then that dog goes off, and it is attempting to protect you from dangers, real or imagined.
With Cubbie, we are working on soothing him, showing him that we are ok, that we are not alarmed, but it hasn’t worked. My wife mentioned that we might need a professional, but I don’t want to pay for that, schedule it, or take the time for all that.
But maybe we should.
And maybe you should as well.
Love,
Aaron

Thanks pastor Aaron. I never thought of it like this but I feel like there is a whole pack of irrational watchdogs living in me. Just recognizing and naming it has been a huge lightbulb moment for me this morning. Amy Claxton
