Friend,
Maundy Thursday.
“Maundy” is one of those weird church words. No one really knows what it means. People have just said it for so long that we pretend to know what it means.
But “maundy” has a meaning. It’s from the Latin word “mandatum” aka mandate or more commonly in English: command.
It comes from John 13:34 "A new command I give to you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.”
Simply put: Maundy means love.
And the command is really two-fold.
Receive love.
Give love.
I think you are weary because you’ve been trying to do the second without the first.
You have gotten consumed with washing others’ feet that you have failed to sit and let Jesus take care of your dirty, tired, sore, and scarred feet.
So today, I want to invite you to make sure you sit before Jesus and just imagine him washing your feet. Imagine him looking up at you with a knowing smile or a tender look in his eye. Trust that He loves your stinky feet, and Jesus loves you.
Love,
Aaron
