Put On Your Brave Face
#180
Friend,
Today, I want to invite you to put on your True Brave Face.
Our culture has convinced us that it is better to appear strong than to be genuine. That’s what we mean when we say “put on your brave face.” Appear strong, even if you are falling apart. Keep going, even if it is detrimental. Be brave.
Bravery, however, isn’t a performance. It’s a perspective.
Bravery is moving forward with hope and courage in the face of danger. It’s not about appearances. It’s about reality. Bravery only exists in spaces where loss is possible or the challenge is high.
Vulnerability is necessary for bravery to exist. If real pain or loss weren’t possible, then bravery is not needed. And thus, if we were truly accurate, then a brave face is a vulnerable one. It’s not a face that pretends nothing is wrong, and everything is ok. A brave face acknowledges one’s own vulnerabilities but moves forward with hope and courage.
A true brave face says this is a difficult day, and I’m moving forward.
A true brave face says I’m overwhelmed, but I’m courageous.
A true brave face says I’m hurting, but I’m hoping.
Love,
Aaron
