Friend,
I know you don’t want to admit it.
I didn’t want to admit mine either.
It’s easier that way, to pretend it doesn’t exist or it’s not that big or that heavy, but let me tell you something:
That little secret you carry weighs a lot.
Yes, you. What’s that thing that you don’t want people to know?
That secret stash of alcohol in the garage.
Those sites you’ve deleted from your search history.
That thing you did when you were 22.
That intrusive thought.
That thing that happened to you, and you vowed that you would never think about it again.
That secret gets heavier. And for some of us, we think we get used to the weight, but we don’t realize that it is dragging us down. That secret one day may even weigh enough to crush you.
I meet with two of you each week to discuss sins and secrets. We are supposed to answer this question each week, “What do you desire to keep secret?”
I’ve learned that the heavy secret instantly gets lighter when it’s in the hands of another person who cares for your good. Because the only thing that happens when secrets stay in the dark is that shame grows exponentially in our secrets.
In the light, secrets shrink.
Maybe you are weary because your secrets are weighing you down.
Have a secret that you need to share? Tell someone who cares, and if you don’t know who that is, then let me know.
Love,
Aaron
Amen! I often share James 5:16 when telling people about our accountability group!
James 5:16, "Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective."
