Friend,
Few things are as tiring as waiting. Whether you are in a doctor’s office, an airport, or the DMV. A minute in a waiting room is like an hour in a living room.
I’m almost certain that right now you are waiting on something.
It might be relatively trivial:
a package from Amazon.
a new season on Netflix.
a text message back about what the plan is for Friday.
Or it might be relatively significant:
a test result from the doctor.
a partner to grow old with.
a potential job offer.
The truth is that we spend most of our lives waiting.
If 99% of living is waiting, we better learn how to do it well.
One reason why we are told to “wait on the Lord.” Because it gives us practice on how to live well while waiting.
Isaiah 40:31 says, “Yet those who wait for the Lord will gain new strength; they will mount up with wings like eagles, they will run and not get tired, they will walk and not become weary.”
We don’t often think that waiting and renewing go hand in hand, but it is that way with God. Waiting for the Lord is like getting up early (though not as early today because of Spring Forward) and watching for the sun to rise. You trust it will happen; seeing when it comes through just in time is beautiful. (In fact, some translations of the word “wait” are instead translated as “trust.”
What we wait for in this world won’t always come through, and that is a painful reality. You won’t always get the job, the partner, or the test result you are looking for. But if you wait for the presence of the Lord, you’ll find your strength renewed for another day. And I want that for you, my friend.
Love,
Aaron
