Friend,
You know that feeling you get when you are heading to a destination, and you are not sure how far it is? It feels like you are walking (or driving) forever.
Last week, our church had an Easter sunrise service in a park in town. I parked, started walking, and followed the signs. It was early, so I was one of the first ones there. It was dark, so I couldn’t see very far ahead. I didn’t know where I was going. It felt like I was walking forever.
And that’s when I realized, the journey feels much longer when you don’t know where you are going.
I imagine that you’ve found that to be true in your own life. When you know where you are going, you know how to pace yourself, what landmarks to look for, and even ways not to go. A journey you’ve done before is way less stressful than a new one.
Even if the new journey is shorter, it feels longer because you are constantly on high alert looking for the destination, and being on high alert constantly is wearisome.
One of the gifts of the sunrise service is that even though I didn’t know where I was going, I never felt lost. The signs were perfectly spaced out and I knew I was going in the right direction even when I didn’t know how far I would be going.
Most journeys in life take us to places where we don’t know where we are going, and so we need signs along the way to ensure that we are headed in the right direction. I believe that God will provide signs and indications that we are on that path. Those signs are rarely as clear or obvious as I would like, but as I’ve learned over the years God is more interested in building our trust in Him than making it easy on us.
Keep walking, looking, and trusting. God will guide you and God is with you.
Love,
Aaron
P.S. I’m preaching a sermon series on “How to Get From Here to There,” and I preached about how God is working on our journeys. You can watch it here.
A very good direction.
Thank you!
