Friend,
Wouldn’t it be great if…
How you finish that question is probably an indicator of the season of your life and your current operating mindset.
Wouldn’t it be great if I woke up without a headache?
Wouldn’t it be great if the school didn’t call me this week?
Wouldn’t it be great to pay down my debt this month instead of adding to it?
Sometimes the “Wouldn’t it be great if…” gets you from a negative to a neutral. If you’ve fallen, then you just want to get up. Other times your finish to that question gets you from a neutral to a positive. Things like
Wouldn’t it be great if we got away again this weekend?
Wouldn’t it be great if I surprised someone with an unexpected gift?
Wouldn’t it be great if we started this new addition in our house early?
One of the greatest human traits is imagination. It’s the ability to see and long for a future that is possible. I love what I heard in a podcast with Dr. Curt Thompson that we are always moving from imagination to incarnation. He said, “There’s no intentional human behavior, whether it’s walking across the floor, or painting a painting, or looking at Saturn through a telescope without first imagining it… We move from imagination to incarnation.”
Our imagination fuels our actions, so what are you imagining? There are seasons of our life where we can only imagine the top list of “Wouldn’t it be great if…” And obviously, part of those imaginations are beyond our control. But we do have some agency in those areas. But it’s hard to thrive if you can only imagine surviving.
So, I encourage you today to imagine possibilities to dream, to long for a future that you want to see, and then start incarnating/living into it/pursuing it in some small way. We were made to dream, and I’d love for you to do that today.
Love,
Aaron
